چکیده

DEFINITION “Spatial databases” consist of large groups of data structured in a way to represent the geographic features of interest to the users of a system. Spatial database models are schematic representations of these data. Database models are created to design and document the system, to facilitate communication and to support programming. They are created using CASE tools (computer-assisted software engineering). CASE tools support schema drawing, dictionaries and code generation. Database schemas are typically represented with a graphical language such as UML (Unified Modeling Language; see http://www.uml.org and [11]).

Generalized Relational Algebra: Modeling Spatial Queries in Constraint Databases

The introduction of constraints in database languages is an appealing direction. In this paper we present a model for constraint databases, derived from the one proposed in 13], and a family of generalized relational algebra languages, derived from the language proposed in 12] and in 19]. Each language of the family is obtained by specifying a certain logical theory for constraints and a partic...

DataModels and Their Translation to Logical

The successful development of any geographic information system project needs the careful design and implementation of spatial databases via conceptual and logical data-modeling. This involves understanding the underlying spatial data model, spatial data types and operators, spatial query languages and spatial indexing techniques. Conventional entity-relationship diagrams have limitations for c...

Modeling Geospatial Databases with Plug-Ins for Visual Languages: A Pragmatic Approach and the Impacts of 16 Years of Research and Experimentations on Perceptory

Modeling geospatial databases for GIS applications has always posed several challenges for system analysts, developers and their clients. Numerous improvements to modeling formalisms have been proposed by the research community over the last 15 years, most remaining within academia. This paper presents generic extensions (called Plug-Ins for Visual Languages or PVL) to facilitate spatial and te...

First-Order Languages Expressing Constructible Spatial Database Queries

The research presented in this paper is situated in the framework of constraint databases that was introduced by Kanellakis, Kuper, and Revesz in their seminal paper of 1990. Constraint databases and query languages are defined using real polynomial constraints. As a consequence of a classical result by Tarski, first-order queries in the constraint database model are effectively computable, and...
